Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax grossed$39.1 million over the weekend, topping the charts for a second weekend of movie-going in a row. And who wouldn’t want to enter an animated land of happy animals bouncing in marshmallows in order to contemplate the effect of greed on nature, with Danny DeVito disguised as a squat orange creature surrounded by fluorescent truffala trees? The Lorax’ weekend take was in line with expectations, albeit a 44% decline from the prior weekend for the film, created by Illumination Entertainment and ComcastÂs (CMCSA) Universal Pictures. Walt Disney’s (DIS) film John Carter fared better than analyst Eric Handler over at MKM Partners expected, at $30.6 million, versus his $27 million estimate. Handler notes that “with approximately $122 million of revenue since its release, The Lorax has passed The Vow as the yearÂs highest-grossing film to date.”
