Alereon, Inc., the ultrawideband (UWB) technology leader for mobile WiMedia and Certified Wireless USB solutions, today announced its participation in the most recent, formal WiMedia Interoperability Event. The testing was run on Alereon's AL4000 PHY chipset, which is based on the WiMedia common radio platform standard.
The Alereon AL4000 Family WiMedia PHY chipset provides a complete WiMedia PHY solution for use with any compatible WiMedia or Wireless USB Media Access Controller (MAC).
Alereon has shipped more than 200 PHY boards to more than 25 customers, including a Cardbus card introduced and developed in conjunction with NEC. In addition, Alereon has developed a Wireless USB Host dongle reference design that will be available in September. The AL4000 PHY entered production in June 2006, is fully qualified over voltage and temperature, and is in stock and available for immediate delivery. A comprehensive validation report is available to partners. The report contains a detailed analysis demonstrating the superior performance and dependability of the AL4000 PHY chipset.
"We are pleased to once again participate in the WiMedia Alliance's Interoperability Event," said Eric Broockman, CEO of Alereon. "With our PHY available for immediate delivery, Alereon is focused on setting the standard for UWB and Certified Wireless USB, which will enable our customers to fully execute their goals within the wireless market. We are aggressively moving forward to ensure our market leadership."
The first WiMedia Alliance interoperability event, held in January 2006, successfully demonstrated initial UWB silicon interoperability between five different manufacturers including Alereon. Members participating in WiMedia Interoperability Events, scheduled quarterly, contribute to the construction and refinement of all test processes comprising the WiMedia Alliance Certification Program. Formal certification testing will take place this fall, allowing initial consumer products to be on retail shelves before the end of the year.
About The WiMedia Alliance
The WiMedia Alliance is a not-for-profit open industry association that promotes and enables the rapid adoption, regulation, standardization and multi-vendor interoperability of ultra-wideband (UWB) worldwide. The basis for the industry's first UWB standards (published by Ecma International), WiMedia UWB is optimized for wireless personal-area networks delivering high-speed (480Mbps and beyond), low-power multimedia capabilities for the PC, CE, mobile and automotive market segments. Emphasizing peaceful coexistence with other wireless services, the WiMedia UWB common radio platform is designed to operate with application stacks developed by the 1394 Trade Association Wireless Working Group, the Certified Wireless USB Promoter Group and the Bluetooth-SIG. WiMedia's board members include Alereon, HP, Intel, Kodak, Microsoft, Nokia, Philips, Samsung Electronics, Sony, STMicroelectronics, Staccato Communications, Texas Instruments and Wisair.
